In a saucepan combine the first 5 ingredients. Add the apples. Cover, bring to boiling. Remove from heat. Meanwhile, in a bowl stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Add the milk, shortening, and vanilla, beat until smooth. Pour hot apple mixture into a 10 x 6 x 2 inch baking dish. Immediately pour batter over apple mixture. Bake at 325ºF. until the topping is done, 30 to 35 minutes. Serve warm with cream, if desired. Serves 6 to 8 |
